unexpected surprises of pregnancy

Pregnancy is a roller-coaster, no matter if it’s your very first time, or your fourth. It’s unpredictable and there’s so much about it you can’t control, and then there are the little surprises you didn’t expect that pop up along the way. Here are three things that rocked my world this pregnancy:

* I got diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes after the infamous glucose test at 28 weeks with my first. This time around, due to my previous history, I was placed on the strict carb-restricting diet starting week 12. I’ll be honest, it kind of made me feel like one of the best parts of being preggo was just taken away from me. That, and the having to poke myself and measure my blood sugar 4 times a day every day. And the scheduling of all my meals and snacks. And the list goes on and on…

* At Week 32, I learned my baby was measuring small. Again, this happened last time around too, so while not a complete shock, still a major expectation change. Now I may just naturally make small babies, but as a precaution in case it’s due to a placental issue or something else, I may have to be induced several weeks before my due date, which doesn’t bode well for my desire to attempt a VBAC this time around.

* The modified bed rest. I’ve been told that it may help my tiny baby to try laying on my left side whenever possible (supposedly it improves circulation.) While impossible at work, and near impossible at home while the toddler’s awake, I’ve been trying my best to follow doctor’s orders when I can. And, let me tell you, laying on one’s left side is not easy – I can’t even type that way! And as a person whose natural personality is to keep moving and get things done, this has been a real challenge for me. It’s also been a challenge since with GD you’re told to exercise and walk after every meal to help control your sugars. Contradictions galore.

At the end of the day, all any mom wants is to have a healthy happy baby, so my advice to dealing with all the twists and turns of pregnancy? Just breathe, relax and enjoy the ride, because – it’s true what they say – it’s all over way too fast.

What were the biggest unexpected surprises that happened to you during pregnancy? Do share!
