As a working mom, life is always go, go, go. It often feels like I am just running around from one place to another, only to race off to the next destination. But throw in one little wrench, like not being able to find my keys, and the whole day kind of falls apart. So here are three things I’ve learned that really help my life run more smoothly.

1. A plan – As a working mom, your time is so limited. You’re always rushing to get out the door to get the kids to daycare and get to work on time, and then racing back in the evening to spend the few precious hours before bedtime together. With all of that moving chaos, I’ve found the difference between a good and bad day to be in how much pre-planning I’d done beforehand. Everything from picking out everyone’s clothes the night before, to repacking the diaper bag the night before and knowing what dinner is going to be when you get home saves so much valuable time and stress in the mornings. TIP: the more you get done the night before, the easier your life will be the day after.

2. A back-up to your plan – As we all know, especially when young children are involved, many things do not go according to plan. Work meetings run late, last-minute emergencies pop up or you get the dreaded call from school that your child is sick. So make sure you always have a Plan B up your sleeve. Have important phone numbers on speed dial.

3. A glass of wine (or two!) – After the kids are in bed, and you’re finally able to enjoy oft-fleeting alone time, pour yourself a glass of wine, kick up your feet and just breathe. Even if it’s just for five minutes, and you have to go back to washing dishes after, giving yourself those five minutes to just be is amazingly recharging.

At the end of it all, I always try to remind myself that the days may seem long, but the years fly by, so despite all of the planning ahead I’m doing, I try to remember to enjoy the present as well.

(Although, toddler tantrums throw all of this out the window, but that’s a post for another time!)
