In 2006 my husband and I decided to start trying to conceive a baby. As we sat in a local restaurant talking over drink and dessert one night we decided that before we could start trying for a baby we had to take a big trip. We didn’t have a honeymoon after our wedding so we just knew we needed to plan a big international trip for just the two of us before having a baby. Almost immediately we started brainstorming and dreaming of ideas.
From that single conversation came the most wonderful trip I’ve ever had the opportunity to experience. My husband and I spent time in England, France, Germany, and Belgium. We walked city streets, ate local foods, sampled local drinks, shopped and saw the sights and came home with couple of suitcases worth of incredible memories. The Eiffel Tower. The Cologne Cathedral up close in all it’s sky reaching glory. Buckingham Palace. Belgian chocolate and beer. German Christmas markets. The list goes on, and on, and I would not trade that trip for anything.
Now almost exactly seven years later, when asked to think about what I would love to show my girls before they grow and leave my little nest my thoughts wander back to that lovely trip and how lovely it would be to show Madeline and Delaney those same things and more. I want to fill their passports with stamps, their minds with memories of lands far away from home and their hearts with love for cultures and traditions different from their own. Seeing the world seems like the best education I can give them.
Hopefully next time my husband and I are in a picture like this- with a landmark from a distant land in the background- I hope these two sweet faces are in the picture with us.
What far-flung places do you plan to take your children? Are there any special places you’ve traveled to that you hope to show your children?
