I recently took Little Man to Disneyland for the first time. He’s been watching a lot of Disney Jr. which I think helped prepare him for meeting the characters and getting into the rides. When we walked through the Disneyland gates and onto Main Street for the first time I have to admit I was probably more excited than he was. The first thing we saw was Mickey Mouse standing off to the side taking photos with all his adoring fans. I pointed him out to Little Man and asked if he wanted to wait in line to see Mickey. His eyes lit up and he shook his head yes. We strolled to the back of the line and I explained to him that we would have to wait for a while to see Mickey. My son is not that patient and I thought his desire would fade after a few minutes of waiting. I kept checking in to see if he still wanted to wait and every time he shook his head yes so we stood there, determined to get our picture with this larger than life mouse.
When it finally came our turn I unbuckled Little Man from the stroller and told him to walk up to Mickey…that’s when the uncertainty set in. He got scared and didn’t want to touch Mickey or approach him alone. I could have just said ok and whisked him away but after waiting for what felt like an eternity in the hot sun I was not about to miss this picture opportunity. I picked him up, handed my camera to a stranger, and boldly approached the big mouse to get the coveted picture. Little Man didn’t seem to mind but still wasn’t about to touch this strange character.
At first I thought maybe he was just nervous because these characters are so big and it’s very different from seeing them on a TV screen. But later in the day he RAN (literally ran!) up to Pluto and gave him a big hug. Not sure what it is about this mouse that has him freaked but I guess we will be steering clear of Mickey and headed for the dog in future visits.
Has your kid ever been scared of characters? Did they grow out of it?
