I have a confession to make. I’m pregnant with my fourth child and I’ve never done a maternity shoot. In fact, pictures of me during pregnancy are few and far between. I never felt comfortable doing weekly belly pics. At my weight I never felt like I had a great baby bump until the last few weeks. And well, taking a picture of myself in the mirror – pregnant or not – feels rather awkward to me.

Dirty mirror - check. Awkward pose/face - check. Picture for the baby book? Probably not,

A couple of weeks ago I decided to step out of my comfort zone and I signed myself up for a maternity photo session. I’ll be a little over 33 weeks during the shoot, so I’m hoping that I’ll get some really great belly shots out of it. I’m a little nervous, and I actually haven’t told anyone yet.

My session is in a week and I still haven’t figured out what I’m going to wear. I’ve been stressing out about it because I want to make sure it’s something I love since I’ll be looking at these pictures hopefully forever. I want it to be timeless and flattering. Picking out the perfect outfit for pictures is pretty overwhelming to begin with – add to that the fact that I’m very pregnant and occasionally puffy and it gets even more difficult.

A cute outfit is a must for any picture.

I know in the end it will come together, and I’m looking forward to having real pictures that will capture my pregnancy beautifully. It’s hard to get over the body issues when you feel like you’re the size of a house, but being pregnant is always amazing for me and it’s important to me to finally have this done. I’m going to suck it up, step out from behind the camera, and rock my bump.

Have you taken professional maternity pictures?

Angela! I give you credit for doing this… I never felt comfortable with doing pregnancy pictures either. After my first pregnancy, I thought “I shoulda…” but then when the second time rolled around I STILL didn’t want to do it! (And now, with no foreseeable pregnancies in the future, I’m thinking “I shoulda” again! Ha!) Best of luck with your shoot and just enjoy it… enjoy that you made the choice to pull the trigger and DO IT!

  2. It will be AWESOME, I promise (cross my heart). I’m so proud of you, and incredibly happy. My BIGGEST piece of clothing advice… wear something you LOVE… not necessarily what you *think* you should love (according to other blogs/pinterest boards out there). I’ll be sending you more info in the next day or two to prep, and let me know if you have ANY questions. It’s gonna be GREAT.

  3. I was horrible about taking pregnancy photos too but I really regret not doing more. I felt so self conscious during my pregnancies that I didn’t want to get anywhere near a camera.

  4. I feel ya sister! I never felt the need to do them either. I did get a couple of belly shots of each pregnancy just to document them but nothing formal. I was the size of a house and felt fat and ugly, who wants to document that!?
