My nights are not always silent.  And my days? Well, those can be louder than a freight train. Our society doesn’t much value silence. I am constantly bombarded by noise from the TV, the trash truck rumbling by my window and even my own smartphone. Because of the never-ending onslaught of busyness and noise, I’m always looking for and finding the silent moments wherever and whenever I can.

Even after the kids are finally asleep and the house is quiet at last, my chaotic inward thoughts begin — the never-ending to-do list, the worries of whether or not I am parenting effectively, the schedule for tomorrow….The list goes on and on. As a mom, I feel like my brain never really turns off, and sometimes the hardest thing to silence is my own thoughts.

finding the silent moments //

We have a bedtime routine with our boys that includes singing Silent Night, Holy Night. And not just during December; we sing this song EVERY SINGLE NIGHT of the year! I know, I know — it sounds strange! Actually, my eldest requested it one evening three or so years ago, and it just sorta stuck. Of course, singing this song in July is pretty comical! But the tune is calming, and singing it tends to turn off all the other thoughts. It’s hard to have internal chaos when your brain is already busy recalling melody and lyrics. Believe me; I’ve tried!

But as I sing the lyrics to Silent Night this Christmas season, I am forced to pause. I pause to allow silence into my head while the beautiful melody and words of this classic hymn permeate my soul. They call me into much-needed rest, even if only for a minute.

So, enjoy this holiday season, and if you should want to join me in finding the silent moments of peace, here are the words to Silent Night:

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright.
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia,
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born.

Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love’s pure light.
Radiant beams from Thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth!
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth.
