It seems that as soon as the clock struck 12:01 am on September 23, the world changed: boots were dusted off, pumpkins appeared everywhere and the new doodle-filled Starbucks fall cups flooded newsfeeds and Instagram. While the rest of the country welcomes the highly anticipated season by staying indoors and cozying up to a fire, Bay Area residents feel like it is summer with our best weather occurring in September and October.
While summer months in San Francisco tend to be colder, foggier and windier than one would hope, fall months reward our perseverance and allow for fun family outings. Here are some of my favorite things to do in these fall months with sun-filled days, warm evenings and light breezes! Also, if you are planning a trip to the Bay Area this is the time to do it!
- Picnic at Crissy Field. Pack up the entire family and head to the gorgeous fields at the northernmost part of the city. You will have views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and Marin. You can walk along the pier, rent bikes, watch the sailboats, and try to master the art of rock stacking! Pro-tip: There is a gravel path along the water and a paved path on the other side of the field– this might influence your stroller choice!
- Pumpkin Carving: The Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival is always a great time! This year’s festival is October 17-18 from 9:00am-5:00pm and admission is free. Pro-tip: Consider making a vacation out of this festival. It draws such large crowds and it is fun to stay in Half Moon Bay and not stress about avoiding traffic all weekend. If you cannot make it to the festival do not fret. Warm nights provide the opportunity to invite friends over and carve pumpkins in the backyard with apple cider.
- Visit the Rock. Visiting Alcatraz Island is an amazing opportunity for families and provides something engaging for all ages. I have been a handful of times since childhood and each time I have a unique experience and learn something new. Pro-tip: The night tour will knock your socks off! It is a mixed bag of thrilling, intriguing, and terrifying and you will get to see the sunset while cruising on the bay.
- Family Spookfari at Oakland Zoo: Grab your tent and camping supplies for a Halloween themed sleepover at the Oakland Zoo on October 24. The $80 cost includes dinner, trick-or-treating and other bonuses! Pro-tip: There are discounts for registering more than five people so get your friends to join!
I hope everyone has a great fall!!
