My life just got interesting.

expecting twins

Very few things in life are as shocking as seeing two babies pop up on your first ultrasound… especially when you already have 4 kids at home. But that was exactly what I saw when I went into the doctor’s office last week. I’m expecting twins!

I’m still reeling a bit from the news.

Two babies. That’s a lot of babies. And it brings up questions I haven’t thought of before like, “how do you pick them both up at once” and “am I seriously going to have to buy a second crib?”.

I was alone when I heard the news. I told my husband it was going to be a “boring” appointment, just taking weights and measurements, so I convinced him that he didn’t need to be there. It turns out that it may have been one of the most interesting appointments in my history as a maternity patient. That’s saying a lot when you consider how interesting my medical history has been.

My pregnancies are . . . complicated, to put it mildly. Twins add to the risk. People keep asking me if I’m excited. And the answer is yes, but terrified at the same time. There are so many things that can go wrong.

I’m actually less worried about caring for two babies than I am about all of us making it through this pregnancy.

So we’re ending 2013 in a big way.

Life does not go the way you plan. In many ways, I’m glad for that. My own plans could never compete with the things that have actually happened in my life. For now I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed that everything stays nice and boring around here for a while.

What is the most unexpected news you have ever received in your life as a mom?

8 Responses to And Then There Were 6… I’m Expecting Twins?

  1. Such an exciting discovery! Luckily you have four “helpers,” right? :)

  2. OMG! Now THAT is big news! I can’t even imagine how I would react to that type of news. I am curious as to how you told your husband and what his reaction was.

    • My husband was shocked. He took a few days to get used to the news. Now he’s excited and telling everyone. It’s definitely an adjustment though. We had room for one more baby. Two makes things tricky and is going to require quite a few changes.

  3. Catherine says:

Congratulations, Rachel! What a big surprise! Sending so many happy, healthy, stress-free thoughts for a smooth pregnancy.

    • Thanks. I’ll take all the good thoughts I can get. My pregnancies are far from stress-free. They wanted me into the perinatologist immediately . . . and that was before they discovered twins. Things are definitely going to be complicated for a while.

  4. Oh my goodness, Rachel – now THAT is a Thanksgiving surprise!!! So hoping everything goes as smoothly a twin pregnancy can! Sending good thoughts!

    • I’m hoping things go smoothly too. I’m already up to appointments every other week so they are keeping a close eye on things. I’m hoping that will help them catch any problems early this time.
