Granny Smith, Gala, Pink Lady. It’s fall and apples are out in full force.  Best of all what’s not to love about the sweet and crunchy fruit that floods into farmers markets and grocery stores this time of year? Kids love apples, they’re a very kid-friendly – and mom-friendly – food.

It is easy to get in an apple rut and stick to those perennial kid-friendly favorites, applesauce and apple slices. Not that there is anything wrong with apple slices or sauce, both are well loved in my house. Slices of apple sprinkled with cinnamon and served with peanut butter or almond butter are happily devoured and bowls of applesauce are joyously scraped clean, but that doesn’t mean new ideas are appreciated around here. So I’ve looked high and low and come up with new kid-friendly ideas to put those delicious apples to use in your kitchen – and mine.

I’m learning to really like cooking with apples, beyond the apple crisps (my fav). Thanks for all these terrific recipes and ideas! I just had the most scruptuous Jona Gold Colorado grown apple sample from Whole Foods the other day. Crisp, sweet & a little tart with a whole lot of juicy. Love when they give out a sample, so smart, as I’d never tried them before.
