A few years back, when my son was {much} younger, I decided to try a new type of advent calendar…a Christmas books advent countdown.

I found this idea online and loved it, especially since I love giving books to my son. You can either buy new books from the bookstore, check some out from the library, or grab books you already own from your own ‘library’ (more than likely, the Christmas books haven’t been read since last year, so they’ll practically be like ‘new’ again!). Some people gather 12 books for a ’12 Books of Christmas’ theme (that’s what I did) and others gather 25 books for a book/day leading up to Christmas.

Once I gathered the 12 Christmas books, I wrapped each one to look like a Christmas present and then placed all of them in a basket in our living room. Each night, my son got to choose a present to unwrap, and we would read that book together that night.

Here are some fun Christmas book suggestions for your Book Advent Countdown:

  1. We do a countdown with books too. I dig out all out holiday/winter themed books, wrap them, and number them 1-24. Each night my girls unwrap that days book and we read it as a family. My girls love it. I love that books – ones we already own – are such an exciting part of the season for us.
